The development of an affordable cost ophthalmoscope is important for Sub Sahelian Countries (SSC) for improving the detection of sight related diseases. The Arclight ophthalmoscope developed with the support of The Fred Hollows Foundation which cost is less than 10 $ enables now a better population screening. The device may be used in the training of eye doctors, clinicians, medical students and may also be used in the field by health workers and nurses for examinations.
The design was very carefully planned with the following characteristics :
Dayligth and violet/blue Leds, Lens, Inbuilt battery rechargeable by a solar panel or through USB cable
A strong effort was done to reduce costs keeping high quality since the budget for diagnostics instruments is much lower in developing countries than in developed ones.
An research article on the test of the ophthalmoscope against conventional devices was recently published in Journal of Ophthalmology Volume 2015, Article ID 743263, 6 pages http://dx.doi.org/10.1155/2015/743263
The Arclight Ophthalmoscope: A Reliable Low-Cost Alternative to the Standard Direct Ophthalmoscope
Last but not least, the device may also be transform in an otoscope through the addition of a small accessory.
