Since many years, the professor René Farcy  (Université Paris XI) spent  part of his time developing an electronic cane for the blind at affordable cost. It was not so simple since technology was only a part of the work and the final instrument was done in cooperation with blinds.

The basics behind the first electronic cane were a laser beam and a detector,  the reflected beam was processed by the detector in order to know the distance of the object which reflected the beam, this information was then transformed in sound of different frequencies.

René Farcy introduced his cane through local NGO’s in three developing countries : Colombia, Peru and Vietnam.

Now he just finished the third version of his cane with major improvements as an embedded GPS.

The following picture was taken at Lima during a training workshop.
